An Interview With The 4yr Olds - The Birth Edition

The girls, Reese and Char in particular, have been real interested lately as to how this baby is going to come out. Not exactly what I had in mind to talk about over our entire lunch today...

Reese: Mom, how is the baby going to get out of your belly anyway??

Me: Um...hmmm...well...

(more hummus anyone? Why don't we talk about preschool...or your upcoming birthday...or anything else.)

Reese: cause, I mean, he's is coming soon, right?

Me: yep, he sure is sweetie. Why don't you tell me how you think we'll get him out, and then we'll go from there.

(Bless their little hearts. They are so innocent.)

Reese: Well, it kinda looks like your belly will just pop...it just keeps growing and growing!

Charlotte: Or they might just take your belly off, get the baby, then glue it back on.

Me: Glue, huh? They would need a lot.

Charlotte: Yea, like a few gallons cause your belly is so big.

Me: Thanks...innocent child who knows not what she says. So how do you think I know when the baby is ready to come out?

Reese: The doctor will call you and tell you it's time...or maybe the baby will just knock a few times on your belly to let you know he wants out.

Charlotte: I'm pretty sure he will ring a bell when he's ready...yea, a tiny little bell.

(Yea, ringing a bell is similar to an intense cramping in my belly, that works its way down, and then wraps around my back.)

(Ahem.)

Me: Those are some great ideas, girls. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

Reese: Yep. Either way mom, no matter how he comes out, it's gonna hurt. Maybe you can take some "motrin" to help...like the purple kind we take. (I have never heard her say motrin...so funny.)

Me: Yea, it might sting just a little, but it will all be worth it!!

Out of the mouth of babes, right? I just love listening to those little wheels turning in their heads, I just wish I had better answers for those young minds!

love it! I have to say there aren't a lot of advantages to c-sections, but it was less awkward to explain that the dr would cut open my belly and take the babies out :)

Oh, boy, do I Love the curiosity of little kids, especially our little mamma girls!

Having worked as a L&D nurse, I've found it hard to beat around the bush, especially when our oldest daughter has a pretty graphic birth video and she has loved watching it since she was little. It hasn't been until recently has she been asking super duper involved questions!

You did a good job!!! Good luck, our little princes are coming soon!

When my third child was born, I just told my children (aged three and a half and almost two) that the doctor took her out. I didn't say anything else, and thankfully, they didn't ask. I continue to tell them that, too. "You have to go to the hospital, and then the doctor takes the baby out."

How funny! Elizabeth (our oldest - who is 6.5 now) was so AMAZED that Ella (our youngest - who was 1 this week) was going to come OUT of my body.

She kept asking me if they were going to give me a cut and pull her out that way or if she was going to come out of my butt.

I told her the truth (where babies REALLY come out) and she just looked at me with the widest eyes. Then said, "Don't that hurt your begina?"

"Why yes, sweetie. It does. And how do you think YOU came out?"

I thought she was going to cry because she realized it hurt me to give birth to her. Such tenderness that girl has!

ummmm... I guess because my husband is a doctor & I am a nurse we just kinda told all of ours the truth....... we just used the correct terminology as my husband always says why not?? we call a finger a finger and a toe a toe..... why not use the correct words?? and just to clarify we were not 'graphic' and were completely age appropriate and led by their level of curiosity... we did not lay out the whole nine yards..... but what they did ask we answered {hope that makes sense}

We did that but it's easier said than done... plus talking straight to young folk seems easier than talking straight to the teens... they cringe & eye roll and make their escape..... funny times.

I think you handled it perfectly... you do it your way because they are your children and you know them best. Plus, you don't actually know how the little fellow is coming into the world just yet.... maybe it will be easier to tell them after..... XX
