A Boys Room In A Girls World

Well, it's time to do the boy's room. I haven't been able to decide on what I want, but the time is drawing near, and the next 2 months will go faster than we think. Not to mention some recent contractions are leading us to believe that he will be here sooner rather than later...but hopefully not till he's good and ready :).

Anyway...

I've hit some sales and started putting his little boyish clothes in the closet. That 1st little sleeper is going to the hospital with us I think, it has a bear on the bum. It's a "bear bottom" sleeper :). Sorry, you can't even get me started on all the boy cuteness that is SO new to me....

And it says Mommy Loves Me with a tiny paw print above it?? I mean, I'm in love.  It's like I didn't even know things like this existed. Alright, moving on, I can swoon over all this blue later.

We need a boyish room to bring him home to. He is the only one in the house that will have his own room, you know? I can't figure out if I want to paint it blue, tan, brown, green, or what? And can a boys room have polka dots? Should it have stripes instead? Should I just do my classic plain and simple decor?

Stars? Animals? Trucks? Help!!

And lets keep in mind that the husband will not tolerate anything that is even remotely gender neutral or "questionable". I assume there is some sort of man code behind those feelings? I don't know, I think this boy is destined to be changing the oil in the car by the time he's 5.

So...

What do you think? What does your boys room look like? What are your favorite boy colors and decor?? I would love any suggestions!

Wow I'm the first one :-)
Before we found out we were having girls I was going to do a boys room in pottery barn kids kasey striped bedding with tan walls. The Conner set is also cute and currently on sale. Hope that helps.

I love the "rock star" theme for boys. So cute :) Being that I have all girls haha.

I think the Peter Rabbit theme is really cute for boys--we saw it at Pottery Barn Kids last week. Our nursery has a nautical theme, which I also love.

I just asked my husband and he said polka dots are not boyish :D

Trucks, cars, and animals have always been winners with my boys. I've also seen some really cute Western-inspired rooms -- it's timeless, the color palette isn't outrageous, and if he likes Toy Story, you're set! :D

Our twins have John Deere rooms. We love that....perhaps beciase we live on the farm. LOL!

My hubby was the same way. It had to be true blue boy, excuse the blue pun.

Can't wait to see what you decide! ;)

We lucked out BIG time because the room we're using as the nursery is already painted baby blue :) But, we are going to stencil some sports balls on the wall. My hubby and my dad might just be a tad excited to finally have a boy to share sports with!

I'd love to see your nursery when you're finished with it! Ours won't be ready for a while, so I still need ideas!

With our son, we did a border around the middle of the wall, rotating pale yellow stars and pale blue moons. It was all on white walls. It was so plain we loved it! I think stripes would be good too!

We have a sports theme contrasted with the colors blue, orange and green.....But I love pottery barns Curious George set!

I'm sure whatever you choose it will be adorable. I always had blue when my boys were young. Now they have white walls and with 3 in there, there is no theme! It's every boy for himself! :)

If we ever have a boy we're going to do a colonial soldiers room with reds and blues :)

We did old toys when Broderick was a baby. Paint was tan, sheets were maroon and tan, and we found old/ antique toys. I loved it because it was baby boy but totally went with our house decor. I think polka dots are great for boy or girl. Good luck!

For our boys I went with dark wood furniture and Navy and Tan bedding from Pottery Barn.

Here's just a side note....PB is expensive, however, from one who has quilted before, it is VERY affordable for their quilts. You couldn't make one for that price!

Anyway, as the boys grew and we saw their interests, we decorated with wall hangings and piggy banks, etc....Which was smart because one LOVES dinosaurs and one LOVES tractors. As they grow and their interests change, it will be less expensive to change these things than to redo bedding as well.

R's room is tan now....it was light yellow when he and L were babies. B's nursery was (and his room still is) dark red with a big tan stripe. There's a lot of cute boy bedding out there now! Sure it will look super cute, and perfect for your little guy, when you are done! Have fun decorating!

I did my oldest son's in dinosaur theme. It was so great in greens, tan and brighter blue. I found a sweet, fun bedding set.

My twins' nursery was done in Western/cowboy. I loved it. I did the walls in DARK (navy) blue, tan hardwoods and red (hankerchief) and yellow accents (for sherriff stars). It turned out ridiculously cute. This was my favorite nursery EVER (like that I have EVER seen for a boys' room) It was fun! Good luck and have fun decorating and picking out sets!

Stripes, nautical, western!?!?! So many choices.

For some inspiration Google Riley Blake All Star fabric. (There is an All Star 2 as well). I think they have nice color combos going on. There's even a site where you can download a printable color swatch if you are interested in her color palette.

I'm definitely on the same page as you decorating-wise. I like simple, clean lines and colors. I'm not that crazy about a bunch of patterns and stuff on walls. Personally, I would probably go with a tan or maybe light green wall color. The more classic it is, the less you'll have to do to change it as he gets bigger! I can't believe all of the hard work we put in painting that room, and now it's all going to change in less than a year! It's okay as long as that kid has a late bedtime...PLEASE?!? ;)

I laughed when you said that he'll probably be changing the car's oil by the time he's 5. It's so true, and all I can think about is Eric standing in the hood of the car last night. Why was that one of the funniest things I've ever seen?! That man knows how to do things...

For our boys, we went with Pottery Barn quilts--striped blue and green. They are totally worth the money after you've washed them 100 times and they still look new! Plus--you only need one this time! :)
We had airplane murals painted by our artist friend, but we can easily switch out the theme and still have our nice quilts!
GOOD LUCK! Can't wait to see your creativity!

I made Travis' room to look like a really cool men's locker room in a golf course. Think country club. Daddy is a big golfer (growing up/played in college/etc) So I felt it worked out great. Not too baby and really far from girly girl that was Campbell's room. Although her room was never baby either with big bold floral prints and browns/pinks and greens the year before it was cool. Also with just the touch of lady bugs and dragonflys prior to all the rage.

What I would have loved to have done for him now. It was always a thought but just didnt jump on it was more of a jeremy fisher (tale of) theme. With blues/browns/greens. fishing poles/bamboo/netting etc. Oh it seemed so yummy at the time and I'd consider it for another boy if we had one. But I holding out that if and when we get blessed again that He gives us one of each and I can do a very whimsical nursery rhyme theme.

But I am sure you will come up with something cool.

I have heard that orange/browns/greens look great for boys rooms with dots and stripes.

PS. I got my bedding from here and it is fabulous!!! http://www.pinecreekbedding.com/pinecreekbedding/
check out the bedding called "chocolate" baby bedding is under the tab over the moon bedding. Mine is no longer available but this is pretty yummy!

We are waiting a few months to do our baby boy's room. I figure he will be with us for a while and we are planning on moving this summer. But, I LOVE Dr. Seuss!! I have seen bedding on Amazon and Ebay that is super cute. My favorite right now is a dark gray/black fabric with gray guitars on it. Accented with turqoise, lime green, or orange, I think it would make cute bedding. My mom is possibly going to make the bedding so that helps keep costs down! I can't wait to see what you choose!

Loved our boys' tiny bedroom in our last old house... Sigh. I found an OLD post on my blog with a picture of the wall colors.

http://bishopbrood.blogspot.com/2009/03/magnetic-masterpiece.html

Straw-yellow on top, white chair rail, and denim blue on bottom. I loved that color combo for some reason. LOVED. (and I always hate what we end up picking!!) The magnetic paint was painted on first under the blue on one wall. Fun!!

I just did some pictures from those "David!" books by David Shannon too. Mischievious (sp?) boy pics!!

Have fun!!

STARS!!!

Someone else mentioned this already but take a peek at Riley Blake All Star 2. I used All Star for my little boys quilts. I loved the orange, blue, brown and green combo. My oldest boy LOVES orange so it's been a common decorating color for the kids rooms - it coordinates well with the girls too! I'm going to use Riley Blake Summer Song for the new baby girl. It has orange, pink, and greens.

Have lots of fun!

The next time we do a boy room, it will be the grey and slate blue look...I'm also madly in love with murals or wall decals...
One reasonably priced site has this cute decal that ties in those two colors:

I liked this one too, but not sure if it's too feminine:

Good luck!

Our 5 year old did his own paint job with red, blue, and green, so there is no paint above his head ;) he has blue letters and lots of framed pictures of him and his buddies. He also has robot bedding that is red, blue, green, and yellow. Our 1 year old will have a green room. His bedding is somewhat gender neutral - spring green with farm animals.....but we have 2 boys. ;) Not sure if that helps or not.... :) Good luck!!
